The Shanklin Chine waterfall

Absolutely lovely (dare I improve on Jane)? And the walk up to it is spectac'.

Shacklin, looking west.

On the Isle of Wright. We were on our way to see the Shanklin Chine, which is a gorge, and its famous waterfall which Jane Austen declared "lovely". Strong word, but she chose it aptly.

Well, we hadn't got there yet so I didn't know any of this. The kind K, who was my traveling companion, was determined to wet her feet. I was determined to keep mine dry, so I sat down with my pinarello Dyna, dressed in full Campagnolo, and drew this picture.

I will add here that the Isle of Wright is a fine place to ride a bike if you don't mind moderate hills, as the picture implies.

An early sketchbook page. I was wandering around Florence with this book, carrying a dip pen and pots of india ink. Not, in retrospect, the best method.
